Description & Activities

The Kodiak Brown Bear Center is uniquely located in the heart of the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge on Karluk Lake. The entire northern half of Karluk Lake and lands adjacent to the Karluk River- around 112,000 acres- are owned and managed by Koniag, an Alaska Native owned corporation and the parent company of the KBBC. There are no roads or private cabins on these lands. When you are their guest, you have exclusive and proprietary access, so you can enjoy the bears and other animals in their natural setting with minimal human interference.

Each bear viewing location offers you a unique glimpse into the life of the bears and highlights the grandeur of Kodiak Island. They have a multitude of sites they can access. Most sites include a scenic boat ride on Karluk Lake where you can look for other Kodiak Island animals and enjoy the surrounding environment. With a maximum group size of 8 they ensure you will have the best possible bear viewing experience while minimizing the impact and disturbance to the bears.

In addition to bear viewing, Kodiak Brown Bear Center offers a variety of other activities including hiking on Camp Island, kayaking on Karluk Lake, standup paddleboarding, sport fishing, bird watching, wildlife photography, and learning about Alutiiq culture and native archeological sites.

Lodge & Dining Details

Nearly a hundred miles from the nearest paved road, the Kodiak Brown Bear Center & Lodge is the place for a quintessential Alaska wilderness experience. Although you are in one of the most remote places on earth, you still have access to all the comforts of home. The modern and private guest cabins each include a queen bed, a twin bed, and a luxury ensuite bathroom with a large walk-in shower. Private covered patios with outdoor seating and panoramic views of Karluk Lake and the surrounding mountains provide the ideal location for morning coffee or a nightcap under the stars.

Built in 2020, The Bear Cave, or the Lodge's gathering room, is a casual space where guests can dine, visit, or just unwind after a full day in comfort. Relax while watching bears meander down the banks of Karluk Lake and take in the breathtaking panoramic views of surrounding mountains. This main building includes a commercial kitchen, entertainment area with satellite television, and room for all to dine. The breathtaking view and local indigenous art are focal points in the Bear Cave.

The dining program highlights classic Alaskan fare of locally caught salmon and halibut with fresh vegetables. They also feature traditional American entrees that include beef, chicken, pork, vegetables, potatoes or rice, and bread. Don't forget to leave room for their creative and decadent desserts! Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served family style in the gathering room, overlooking Karluk Lake and the surrounding mountains. It is not uncommon to observe the legendary Kodiak brown bears on the lawn outside while you enjoy your meal.
